Looking like a DVD. Please tell me it’s not true you guys are splitting! Have some time apart to do your own thing sure, but keep making awesome music boys.
Damn straight I’d have to agree there is a Cog sound and a sound that should continue to be heard for at very least another 12 years! Come back to Melbourne soon!
cog sound is a live sound! bring us a tour fellas. i need a new tour shirt my others are threadbare! u wouldn’t have a fan getting around in rags would u? looking forward to whatever u prestent to us, cause cog sound is my sound! go aus music!
Blatantly a recording / tour DVD. They always said it was going to happen when recording Sharing Space.
I think the ‘more intricate than any other band’ comment is not only arrogant its simply wrong. Cog need to realise that writing 12 minute epics mostly in 4:4 with lucius over-playing the drum fills at every opportunity, throwing in the odd time signature change is not all that ground-breaking. There are many bands out there (Textures, Meshuggah etc) who are far more complex and sophisticated in both a rythmic and song structural sense. Even Karnivool are experimenting with polyrythmic beats while cog are still bombing away on their stu copeland hihg-hat festivals from the 80’s. Cog’s lyrics in their latest album are terrible, as about as ‘intricate’ as blunt force trauma with a brick to the head. Half the album are 4-4 pop songs and the 2 epics are a mash-potato-bake of older cog songs and reggae hits of yesteryear. For mind, the reason the new album blew hard when compared to the New Normal is simple, cog’s egos drifted off into the sunset, they forgot their roots, they chased the dollars, and they pissed off everyone including their label, their producer and their audience in the process.. Dont let the bigger Aria results fool you guys, you could have released a recording off a dog taking a dump and it would have debut’d at number 2, you deserved that respect from the New Normal (which is one of the best albums of all time).
Cog needs to chill back, take a breath, and realise they arent a pop band, never will be, so start writing REAL music again and lose the 3 minute bill-payer hit-single wannabes. Please cog, find your way back to reality, stop dumbing your shit down to try to make more coin and start pushing yourself as musicians again, head back to Just Visiting / The New Normal sound. (oh and KILL ALL MAJOR KEY SONGS! eeeek!)
I’d agree that it’s a bit silly of Flynn to say “Cog’s music is more intricate than any other band”…although we don’t know the context in which he said it.
I LOVE Textures, Meshuggah, Karnivool and major key songs.
You’re right in saying all that stuff from a technical perspective, but I see no guarantee that you’re capable of experiencing music from any other perspective.
I think ‘Sharing Space’ is amazing WORLD MUSIC in the best sense.
Cog have substance and essence, which both transcend technical box-ticking (as much as it’s possible for them to be aided by it).
Yeh, not hating on sharing space by any means.. Just that from a listeners point of view, i consumed / flogged sharing space for a few months but now its mostly painful to listen to, seems to lack depth and has far too many ‘cringe’ moments and skip songs. I still play No Other Way and PRS but they are no Doors or Naming the Elephant by any measure, and I do like Are You Interested up until the lyrics kick in and we are finally privvy to that age old question ‘are they making lists?’
Where as The New Normal still sits proud in the stereo and tracks like realife, resonate, doors, naming, silence, anarchy, and on and on are all still very listenable with almost zero cringe moments. Songs off New Normal have this kind of timeless futuristic depressive vibe that was pretty much lost on SS. SS This ‘vibe’ i cannot really explain apart from saying it wasn’t really there on the EP’s and it isn’t there on Sharing Space. Think intro to doors. Its just so damn simple and powerful and has a kind of techno / trance effect. Watching it on stage live as an opener with flynnos standing in the single spotlight was like being hypnotised by an alien, the closest thing to that in sharing space I can remember is some reggae breakdown in no other way which made me wanna light up a sliff and grow some dreadlocks.
I do hope cog stay together tho for at least one more album. Lots of bands lose their way on second LP’s, their egos end up over shooting the mark after debut album success and things get confused. I reckon after a break a third cog album could have the potential for greatness. Id love to see them get angry / depressed again and write the sort of spookily good shit they were doing in New Normal, not bowing to labels demands for 3 minute pop songs with straight structures your sick off 4 weeks later.
For a bit of fun, heres my top 5 most lasting cog songs.. Into the rip biatches… I put Real Life as number 1 because it is so powerful / emotional and has some of the most creative yet flowing song structures and hooks. Its truly an original song which even the most anal whiners such as myself cannot just say ‘thats been ripped off from X band / album’
COGS TOP 5 MOST TIMELESS SONGS
1) Real Life
2) Doors
3) Resonate
4) 1010011010
5) No Other Way
Firstly…congrats Flynn on the new arrival in your lives. Secondly, will this new “Real Life” effect the recently published tour dates for the band? Thirdly…just come and rock my socks off as you always do.. as soon as poss…please?

Just to clarify it is none of the band that say ‘Cog’s music is a lot more intricate than any other band’. Yes it would be arrogant to say this!
